As many distilled spirits that you can produce from many different models and styles, but here are six main categories, Whiskey, Brandy, Gin, Rum, Tequila, and Vodka.
Whiskey is created from fermented grain mash and usually requires 4 main stages: malting, mashing, fermentation and distillation. Various grains are used for different varieties, including barley, corn, rye, and wheat. Whiskey is typically aged in wooden casks.
Brandy is created by distilling wine, which can be made at home using any type of fruit. After the fruit has fermented, the liquid is distilled twice to produce a strong, clear spirit.
Gin is created by distilling a high grade neutral alcohol and getting as creative as possible with the ingredients, as long as you don’t forget Juniper. The neutral alcohol is mixed or steamed through the recipe of juniper berries and botanicals. This final distillation will result in a flavoured spirit with a noticeable degree of complexity.
Rum is created from a simple base of sugar, yeast and water. Rum has been a favourite spirit around the world, used in most tropical drinks and cocktails. There are a few methods to make rum, but mostly it is made from pure sugar cane juice or molasses.
Tequila is created by distilling blue agave plant, which is commonly mistaken for a cactus, but it’s really a relative of the lily. Traditionally the plant is harvested, then sugar is extracted and placed in fermentation tanks. Once the fermentation is done, it’s distilled at least twice and then placed to age in barrels.
Vodka is created from grains, potatoes, sugars, and fruits that are fermented to produce alcohol. It’s a neutral spirit that is usually not aged. This distilling process requires caution to discard the methanol, which can be harmful if consumed.
All customers should have in mind that most spirits are based on a process that requires safety precautions through the process.
